Titanium Pocket Tool Big Idea Design

It fits an EDC multitool comes from Big Idea Design. We all struggle for the right mix of features we need and size. No one wants to feel like we are carrying around an extra phone. Looking at you Apple.

The Titanium Pocket Tool, or TPT, looks to check all the boxes and add a few extras to its Kickstarter campaign. If you've ever looked for a Kickstarter campaign that has history, look here.

Chadwick Parker and Joe Huang have 17 projects through the crowdfunding site, and the Big Idea site is filled with previous campaigns that blitzed through funding goals and became production realities.

It proves the mantra it isn't the size, but how you use it. A pocket tool with a footprint so small, you forget it's there.

TPT started off with a basic want. An EDC multitool with a low profile, but the ability to tackle the everyday scenarios we all run into. Oh, and it had to look damn good. They are product designers, after all.

Each Titanium Pocket Tool is machined from 'stone washed' Grade 5 titanium alloy. The lanyard is 550 Paracord, adding another layer of functionality to the TPT.

Size and the weight come in at 3" x 1" x 4mm. It tips the scales at less than ounce or 24 grams. Yeah, it's tiny but packs a punch.

TPT Features

It looks good and passes the size test for an EDC multitool. But, what can it do? The team tossed their favorite tools on a table and figured out what they could put in the TPT form factor.

For a small package, it's laundry list of functions:

  • Bottle Opener
  • Flat Head Screwdriver
  • Wide Flat Head Screwdriver
  • Internal Magnet
  • 1/4″ (6mm) Hex Bit Opening
  • Measurement Cues
  • Mini Pry Bar
  • Scraper Edge
  • Stainless Steel Insert "Dual Function"
  • 550 Paracord Lanyard / Key Ring Opening
  • Accepts Standard Utility Razor Blades (not included)
  • Universal Wrench Design (15 Socket Sizes)-SAE 15/64, 1/4, 17/64, 9/32, 5/16, 11/32, 3/8, 7/16 in.
    Metric 6,7,8,9,10,11,12 mm

The bottle opener. I think the bottle opener is added as a joke at this point. It can construct the bed you bought, open packages, handle damn near any wrench and socket size and crack open up a beer.

One feature that piqued my interest has to be the integrated camping fork. That will go down as one of the 'facepalm' design moments among other multitool creators. It's perfect for those who love the outdoors but are obsessive about keeping pack weight down.

Damn near anything you can think up. Let your inner Macgyver shine. No more looking for the screwdriver set that has suddenly walked off.

Open packages without destroying kitchen knives. I may or may not do this all the time when UPS shows up with my Amazon haul.

Looking to change up your EDC? It has all the function you want coupled with the design multitools have needed for a long time.

Standard utility blades fit the TPT but are not included. You'll want to take the blade out if you plan on the walking through a TSA checkpoint.

Current guidelines state as long as screwdrivers/wrenches/pliers are less than seven inches long, they can make it through the security screening. That may be the official line, but discretion rests with the TSA officer.

If you have concerns, remove the inserts and toss it in your checked bag.

The campaign barely switched live, and the funding goal was crushed. Big Idea Design wanted $5,000 for its TPT project. Over a month is left for the campaign, and it's sitting north of $100,000.

If you're looking for the TPT only and not the leather sheath, $40 is the pledge tier you want. Adding the leather sheath will set you back $50. Shipping on the TPT is for June 2016.

It's not their first Kickstarter rodeo. The company has delivered in the past, and the TPT will be their 17th project. Ship dates could slip if the project becomes extremely overfunded due to manufacturing lead times.

Big Idea baked some room into the timeline for that but over a month remaining and 20 times the funding goal? Watch the update area of the Kickstarter campaign for any shipping delays.
