Use Of A Dash In Writing

Green, Cuisine, Food, Ingredient, Dish, Recipe, Font, Produce, Finger food, Comfort food,

When I was first working in New York, I used to intern all day then walk 15 blocks south to my (paid) proofreading job, consuming something fast and cheap—usually one McDonald's cheeseburger and small fries ($2.14 back then!) or a slice of pizza—along the way. It was sort of the urban equivalent of hitting the drive-thru and chowing in the car.

My eating habits have improved a lot since then—for almost four years, I've rarely eaten fast food, unless it's an emergency, like I'm traveling and it's my only option. But I still have days when there's no time to sit for a meal. On Monday nights, I take a class after work, and there's no way I can make it till 8:30 without something in my stomach.

Sometimes I grab pizza, but it's not the healthiest option. I've tried sandwiches, veggie sushi and salads, but they're all so messy (and garner me weird looks when I eat them on the subway). Last night, I tried something new: Lean Pockets Made with Whole Grain. Each of the cheesy, whole-grain-y pockets has 260 calories or fewer and—best!—the suggested retail is $2.46 for a two-pack.

I microwaved the Chicken, Broccoli & Cheddar pocket before I left the office, then toted it out in its paper wrapper. The verdict? Easy to devour on the move, but I was definitely ready to eat again after class.—Jennifer Conrad
